Second Life of Waste
MARKETPLACE 5 November 2018
Fly ash and bottom ash (FABA) produced from power plants run by YTL Jawa Timur is reused as a part of the raw materials for the manufacture of pavement blocks. The composition for one paving block contains 0.24% fly ash and 8.96% bottom ash, and the blocks are used widely for paving roads and walkways in villages and mangrove conservation areas. To date, a total of 1,243,078 of paving blocks have been produced since March 2016.
The production of paving blocks from FABA has undergone several years of research before being granted a permit by Indonesia’s Ministry of Living Environment and Forestry (KLHK). The paving blocks have remarkably good quality and are being used in paving for roads and walkways in villages, school areas and public facilities such as jogging tracks.
Besides being used for paving roads, the FABA paving blocks are also deployed on the seabed, as a substrate for restoring coral reefs. The coral transplantation project is being carried out continuously with the target of adding more transplanted nubbins. The project has been a success where the survival rate has reached over 90% via the usage of FABA.
